The Real Cost of Junk Food

We all like to treat ourselves when it comes to food. As the saying goes a little bit of what you like does you good. Unfortunately, it seems that the United Kingdom has abandoned the sentiment of this phrase to become a nation of Junk Food addicts.

Recent studies suggest that as a nation we are quickly heading for a health disaster and what’s worse it is our children who will pay the biggest price.

Research indicates that on average parents in the United Kingdom are providing each of their children with £352 a year to spend on Junk Food such as Chocolate, Cake, Sweets and Crisps. This is the equivalent of two and a half chocolate bars per day, per child.

Perhaps then it comes as no surprise that Government statistics support the assertion that one third of children between the ages of five to thirteen in the UK are now classed as obese. Even more worryingly children in UK are actually surpassing their American counterparts in respect of the speed with which they are getting fatter. In fact, UK children are eating double the amount of junk food that American children do every year.

Currently, it is thought that around 40,000 people a year die due to health problems brought on by a poor diet and it would seem that this figure is set to increase massively as our children continue to eat themselves into an early grave.

It is thought that the NHS spends £6bn a year in treating and attempting to prevent health issues relating to obesity and despite Government campaigns to raise awareness of this issue the nation seems to remain unmoved by the facts laid before it.

All research seems to indicate that the real cost of junk food will not just concern our Bank balances, but our own health and that of our children. The true cost of junk food remains to be seen, but we can be certain that whatever the cost is we will pay it as individuals and as a nation
