For Sale at any price - Britain

John Dawson, Newcastle

It's no secret that Britain has been going through a very difficult economic period and the record amount of debt our nation is carrying is certainly a massive cause for concern.

However, there is something far more terrifying than the current economic situation, something that should be keeping everyone awake at night and that is our willingness to sell the British companies and brands that we are so proud of to the highest bidder without a second thought

The biggest problem this nation has is that we are so eager to sell the very things that make it what it is.

You don't think this is a big problem in the scheme of things?

Well think again because Britain seems to be up for sale!

When I speak to my family, my friends, my neighbours and my work colleagues I can hear how fed up they are. Everyone seems worried about money, about the security of their job, about cuts to public services and to be honest so am I.

If you pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV, you can pretty much guarantee that you will be able to find a report telling you all about how the Banks are ripping us off, about how many people are going to lose their jobs, about how terrible things are.

I am 40 years old and I know from experience that economic downturns are the way of the world. Admittedly, this one is very bad, but at some point we will come through this. However, when I pick up a newspaper and read about yet another British giant being sold to a foreign company, that's when my blood turns cold.

The likes of Cadbury's, Terry's, Rowntree, Jaguar, Abbey, and Scottish Power have all sold out to foreign companies and those are just the ones I can think of right now.

What kind of message are we sending out to British children?

Are we teaching them that the only value things have is in how much you can sell them for?

Are we teaching them that Britain's only worth is creating brands and companies so that Europe, America and the rest of the world can enjoy all the benefits?

Are we teaching them that Britain is a country that is only concerned with making money whatever the social cost?

The leaders of this country, the heads of small and large companies and parents need to start asking these types of questions for the sake of our children and their children.

I do not deny that right now some very tough financial questions need to be asked of this country and I am not blind to the fact that across Britain families are struggling just to make ends meet.

I understand fully that right now the focus of everyone's attention is financial survival, but while we are all busy trying to stay financially afloat, this very country is being quietly taken from us and our children piece by piece.

The facts are simple. If as a country we sell everything we have built of value we will leave our children with an empty, worthless shell of a nation and our they will lose all sense of national identity.

If we are to secure this nation's financial security and in turn the future of our children, we need to start looking at the bigger picture and we have to stand behind the belief that Britain deserves its place in the world and should not be swallowed up by nations who have an open cheque book.

We need to stand firm and show the rest of the world that no matter how big the cheque, Britain is not for sale!! Find an Independent Financial adviser
